So You Want To Be A DJ
These days it seems that just about everybody under 30
have ambitions of becoming a superstar DJ and it’s not
hard to see why. If your idea of a fun life means
frequently playing out in front of 5000+ clubbers on a sun
kissed Ibiza beach and having each and every one of them
chant your name with religious passion then this is the job
for you. If your idea of excitement means groupies, elite
vip parties, adoration, and having all the best tracks in
the world sent to you completely for free then this is
definitely the job for you. If, you quite fancy the idea of
earning upwards of $10,000 per week for a maximum of a mere 8
hours work then man this is obviously the career
that you were born for!
However!!
I’m sorry to say this friend but to get to the levels of
fame and wealth noted above is gonna take more than a
weekend or two of hard assed practicing on your decks. In
honestly it’ll likely take more than a few years of hard
work and dedication and it’s also quite easy to see how
people can get lost and not have a clue how to get to the
next level. But fear not, friends because the purpose of
this guide series is to fill in all those gaps and give you
the all info you need to succeed so read on and enjoy!
Step 1 – Join A Online network for DJs and producers
Here you’ll find a whole community of DJs and producers who
are all in the same boat as you, everybody’s starting off on
the path to greatness and we’re all out to help each other.
By joining a community you’ll get access to free online
hosting of your mixes, feedback from other members,
inspiration, promotion, collaboration, DJ contests, mixing
tips and much much more and all completely for free to boot.
This is absolutely essential for any aspiring DJ.
Step 2 – Contact all of the club promoters in your area
It’s quite hard to stress how important this is really; you
see club promoters aren’t short for DJs in all honesty; in
fact they’re pretty much inundated with gig requests from
all angles. This means that if you’re gonna get yourself
seen you’ve gotta make yourself as visible as possible! Go
to cool clothes shops that display club flyers and grab the
lot; also be sure to loot small independent record shops for
their flyers too. Flyers almost always have the contact info
of the promoters on them which you an obviously use to call
or email the person in question. Now when you do actually
call or email, be friendly, confident but to the point and
simply state that you’re a DJ looking for gigs. The odds are
that they’ll ask you to send them a mix to listen to which
then gives you two options:
A – Email them with the link to one of your mixes on your
chosen online network
This is the better of the two options because it’s
infinitely quicker for you and costs absolutely nothing,
there’s also no chance of them losing your mix and
forgetting to tell you about it.
B – Give them a cd to listen to
This option is to be discouraged if at all possible. Despite
the hassle of buying cds and converting your mp3 mix to wav
to make it stereo playable then actually burning the disk
before risking the total accidental destruction of the whole
thing by sending it via post, there’s always the chance that
the promoter may simply lose it and never actually get
around to listen to it. And trust me if and when they do
lose it, they won’t tell you a thing, and they’ll just get
on with their lives.
Well that’s it for this article folks, be sure to catch the
next installation in which we’ll be discussing how to get
the contact info of club promoters both nation and
worldwide, how to handle rejection, resources to teach you
DJ skills and much more!
Ciao!
