Thanks to the Internet and the role it plays with breaking in new artist, it leveled the playing field to some degree (or at least made it possible for a newbie to get recognized). It also forced new artist to be more aggressive at making things happen for themselves. Back then (when ever that was), the record labels used to groom and work with the artist. Today the artist must already have their act together.
Regardless of how good you are, if you possess the one thing that record companies love the most, you stand a better chance at getting a record deal. That one thing is..... a massive fan base! If you have a massive fan base then the record company doesn't have to work as hard to sell your music. Record companies would rather take on a less than great artist who has built up a huge following than to take on a brand new artist with a hot project. The reason is because they are into making money, not signing artist who sounds the best. You can have a great album but if people aren't feeling it, then everybody looses. Record companies are not in the business of loosing if it can be avoided.
You as an artist must focus on ways of building up your fan base. Sure radio spins will help but it will take more than just that. After all what good is it to hear you on the radio but I don't know how or where to buy your music?
Invest into banner ads on various social sites, buy radio ads that TELL people how and where to buy your music. Put posters up in places other than your hometown. Buy a city bus ad. Buy TV ads. Do what you must but whatever you do.... don't ever think to yourself that just because your project is good that it will happen for you. For some, it may but for most, it never will. You must go and make it happen for yourself and in time the record companies will come looking for you!
